October 9 - 14, 2013 - 49 Ship Kansas City Chiefs Game Flyover

Background.  I've seen a couple of mass RV formations at AirVenture, thought they were pretty cool, and thought that I might like to do that someday.  Then last year I was watching Monday night football, a meaningless game between the Kansas City Chiefs -- worst team in the league -- memorable only because the Chief's running back literally cost his team the game for excessively celebrating after scoring the go-ahead  touchdown (which was called back).  It's the stupidest thing I've ever seen a football player do and I've watched a lot of football.  Anyways, I'm laying on the couch waiting for the game to start and suddenly they show a bunch of planes fly over the stadium in formation during the national anthem.  "Hey, those are RV's!"  I exclaim.  Sure enough, it was a sixteen-ship flyover by The KC Flight Formation Team.   Then last spring I attended a Formation Clinic down in North Carolina.  A bunch of the Kansas City RV formation guys were there.  One of them -- Ripper -- told me they were putting together a 45-ship flight over a Kansas City Chiefs football game in the fall and was I interested?  I never hesitated.  I'm in!

Fast forward to the fall.   Lynnette decided to travel out to Kansas City with me.  We'd go a day or two early and do some sightseeing.  I measured my RV's wingtips for the smoke brackets.  Then it was just keep the fingers crossed and hope for good weather.

Well,  everything went ridiculously well.  We had a tailwind heading west to Kansas City.  (That never happens).  The weather was perfect for the Saturday practices and Sunday gameday flight.  The plane performed flawlessly.  It was great being part of the group and enjoying the comraderie.  Not only did we get 45 planes for the flyover, we got 49!  KC Flight raised $30,000 for Breast Cancer Awareness month.  The flight Sunday went perfectly.  The stadium was packed and the fans loved the flyover.  The Chiefs won, improving their record to 7 - 0 for the season.  The whole thing could not have gone better.  Special recognition goes to BeeGee, Ripper and Maverick of KC Flight who conceived, planned, organized and led the entire event.  Bravo Zulu.
